Keto – isn’t that the crazy diet where all you eat is bacon and butter??

Absolutely not!

Read on to find out what keto really is.

What Is Keto?

Keto – Simplified

Keto is a high fat, moderately high protein, and low carbohydrate diet that reduces/eliminates carbohydrate and sugar intake.

Keto is ideal for people who:

  • Are non-vegetarians
  • Perform low-to-moderate activity
  • Want aggressive fat loss

When following a standard ketogenic diet, insulin levels are reduced and we stay away from refined carbohydrates and fulfill our carbohydrate intake through complex carbohydrates (vegetables).  This process has a hunger (and sugar) reducing effect.  It is structured so that caloric intake is as follows:

  • Fats – 70%
  • Proteins – 25%
  • Carbohydrates – 5%

The key goal of a ketogenic diet is to get into ketosis and for your body to start producing ketones.

Why Embark On A Ketogenic Lifestyle?

  •  Rapid and sustained weight loss.  (As long as the keto lifestyle is maintained).
  • Provides greater mental clarity. (The ketogenic lifestyle results in improved focus, reduction in anxiety, higher energy levels, and better sleep).
  • Can improve chronic health conditions.  The ketogenic lifestyle has been shown to control epilepsy, type-2 diabetes, cancer (cannot use ketone bodies for energy, thereby decreasing growth of tumors), cholesterol and triglyceride levels (linked to heart attacks and strokes), high blood pressure, and Parkinson’s disease.

According to a January 2020 article in Medical News Today, a ketogenic lifestyle does more than just  support weight loss.  It can improve skin, reduce the risk of certain cancers, improve heart health, and protect brain function.  Others report that a ketogenic lifestyle decreases inflammation, improves mental clarity and sharpness, increases energy, and promotes better sleep.  Rather than focusing solely on weight loss, I’d also like you to consider the benefits addressed in this paragraph.

What Is Your Why?

You’re obviously on this page for a reason.  You must be looking for answers to the questions that you have about keto.

Reflecting back on the previous paragraph as to why one would choose to follow a ketogenic lifestyle, think about the benefits for a moment or two.

Now, give serious thought to the question What Is Your Why?
