Carbs and keto ….

Total carbs?  Net carbs?

The Difference Between Total Carbs And Net Carbs

As you learn more and more about keto, you will start to hear about net carbs versus total carbs.

Total Carbs

Refers to all of the carbohydrates that you consume – all of them.

Net Carbs

Refers to those carbs that are absorbed by the body; the rest don’t count.

To calculate net carbs:   fibre and sugar alcohols are subtracted from the total number of carbs.

For example:

If a product has a macro value of:

  • 14 grams of carbohydrates
  • 3 grams of fibre
  • 6 grams of a sugar alcohol (i.e. erythritol)

Then, calculating net carbs looks like this:        14 – 3 – 6  =  5 grams of net carbs.

Total Carbs or Net Carbs?

Some people count total carbs, others count net carbs.  There is no right or wrong.  Those who love their veggies often prefer to count net carbs as keto-friendly vegetables are high in fibre.  By counting net carbs, one is then able to fit more vegetables into daily macros.

For the first 6 months that I was on keto, I religiously followed the total carbs form of calculating.  Every single carb that went into my mouth counted.

As I got closer and closer to my goal weight, I started to count net carbs.

Please note that most tracking apps, MyFitnessPal and Carb Manager being two, allow you to set your preference – calculating either total carbs or net carbs.  Set yours accordingly..

For purposes of those who are just beginning keto or those who are wanting to be part of the 10 Week Keto Challenge, I would like to suggest that you count total carbs.  This will result in a lower total carb intake and likely have a more positive impact on your weight as you begin your weight loss journey.  Note that this is just a suggestion.  It’s up to you
