Unique Potty / Toilet Training Tips & Tricks

Aim and Fire

When toilet training young boys, place a few cheerios in the toilet and have them aim and try to hit the cheerios.

Get Smart With Smarties

Set aside a container of smarties in the washroom.  When toilet training children, present one smartie each time the child pees in the toilet.  Give two smarties for a bowel movement.  As children receive the treat right after going to the bathroom, this is an opportune time to reinforce the idea of washing hands.

Green Pees

Place blue toilet pucks in the toilet bowl.  When children pee, the blue water turns green!

Punch’Em

Write numbers in squares around the outside edges of an index card.  In the center of the index card, record the child’s name and allow him/her to decorate this middle area.  Each time the child uses the toilet properly, punch one number out of the index cards.  When all numbers have been punched, allow the child to select a reward/prize.

Staging For Success

Work with your child to come up with a great way to decorate the toilet.  Turn the toilet into a rocket ship, a sports car, a throne (lol!) …. anything that will appeal to your child and encourage him to head to the toilet.

Training Sing-Along

Come up with a potty-training song that you can sing to – or with – your child.  The song can be sung on the way to the potty or while on the potty.  If you’re stumped at creating your own song, check out Kandokids for some great songs that children will love.
