A place for Mommas to learn, share, grow, and vent.

Are you looking for a quick, super-cute craft to make with some littles?

Here are a few of the favorites that my own children made when they were younger.

Cute Crafts For Kids

CD Picture Frames

  • Measure and cut out two squares of colored paper to fit inside of an empty CD case.  (Trace the liners from the case to get an accurate size).
  • Allow children to draw pictures on the paper or have them glue on photographs.
  • Insert the two pieces of finished art, add some decorative bows, beads, or costume jewels, and a brand new picture frame is made!

Homemade Chia Pets

  • Place 1 tablespoon of grass seed into the toe into a knee-high stocking.
  • Add approximately 3 cups of sawdust or peat moss – being careful not to mix it up too much.
  • Shake the sawdust/peat moss down into the toe and shape it into a ball.
  • Soak the ball in a bucket of water for 2-3 minutes and then place it in a saucer.
  • The next day, when it’s dried out, decorate the face with permanent marker or fabric paint.
    • Glue googly eyes on the face.
  • Set the chia pet back in the dish in a sunny spot.
  • Don’t let the chia pet dry out – occasionally set it upside down in a bit of water to soak the seeds.
    • The hair should begin growing in approximately one week.

 Ocean Shakers

  • Fill a small baby food jar with ¼ cup water and ¼ cup corn syrup.
  • Add glitter and accessories such as shells, costume jewels, plastic fish, aquarium gravel, etc.
  • Glue the lid shut with a glue gun.
  • Shake the jar and watch the treasures settle.

Something Fishy Around Here

  • Search for smooth, flat stones in a variety of shapes and sizes.
  • Have children paint the surface of each stone with acrylic paint and let the rocks dry.
  • Glue googly eyes on the rocks and add a feather for the fish’s tail.
  • Use smaller paint brushes to add scales, polka dots, a smile, or squiggles.

Sweet Stickers

  • Have children design small pieces of artwork.
  • Once the artwork is ready, pour 2 tbs. of boiling water over 1 tbs. of jell-o powder.
  • Stir until dissolved and then allow the mixture to cool.
  • Brush the cooled jell-o mixture onto the back of the artwork.
  • Let the artwork dry until the gelatin has set (approximately one hour).
  • Allow children to lick the back of the artwork (tasting jell-o) and stick the stickers on notebooks, cards, lunch bags, etc.

Utensil People

  • Draw faces on wooden spoons and spatulas.
  • Use popsicle sticks to create arms and paper to make hands.
  • Color the handle of the utensil – adding clothing, buttons, etc.
  • Have children perform utensil people plays.

Faces and also be drawn on popsicle sticks for the same effect.  A cereal box (with the centre cut out) is the perfect sized theatre for popsicle people plays.
